I don't know if it's true but I'm told that changing spurs or pinions is a pain in the a$$ regardless if you have them on the clutch bells already. You need to take out the engine mounts etc. Is this true?

vadn1 its going for $334.95 for the FW05R I just mentioned on top
No Hudy, this version is the one that comes with foam tires instead of the European version that use to come with rubber tires. No lightened or carbon stuff here.

Responding to your comments about the FW-05R being slower on the straights compared to the belt driven cars I must tell you that is not true. I have personally raced against 710, MTX-3 and I must tell you, no clear advantage here. We all are toe-to-toe on the straights taking into consideration that most of the people running on the B and A mains (on the track that I race) are using powerfull motors such as Mugens X-12, Murnan Mods, NovaMegas MS, Rody Roems and JP Blacks (using it myself). The 05R has a unique feature which is it's flexibility to change the internal ratio of the car. By changing to 39 T bevel gears (part No.VSW018) you will be able to squeeze more MPH for bigger tracks (straights with more that 200 feet)

What's the length of the track you race on? Not saying that shaft cars suck on high speed tracks but the FW05R is just short of gearing out of the box or with Kyosho options.

The straight is about 185 feet. I am still using the factory bevel gears (40T) which I think is O.K. for the track. I would not want to install the lower ratio (on my track) because the car would not be able to make full RPM which, in my opinion is not good (the cars with the correct ratio will get me at the middle of the straight, got it) In other words, given my track scenario my motor will take longer to get to the "sweet spot" (peak HP) than the other cars.

here is a picture of the local track:

If thats the track you run on your engine must rev to about 120,000 RPM!! I get max revs 2/3 the way along our straight and its around 130ft long.

For about a 150ft straight the max gearing ratio you have will not be enough. thats 45t spur. 27t pinion and 39t bevels. You will need to go to 28 pinion or even 29. This brings you to the same gearing as an MTX-3

Yup. but at least you dont have to fart about unscrewing them from the bell.

Aldershot is 150ft, I use 26/45*39 for the heats, and may use 27/45*39 if I want to try a 10 minute pit free run, but there again I run on rubber so my wheels stay larger at around 61/63mm.

Ziggy: I am not 100% with you Ziggy. I am writing using only what I have experienced racing against MTX-3 with both, stock gearing and "revised" combinations with no apparent advantage on either side. After all, winning is attained in the infield not in the straights! To give you a better scenario, my engine runs in a average temp of 220-230 after a 15 minute race.

I raced the exact same gearing combination as in my 05R on my NTC3 at the 2003 Winternationals in Ft. Myers, FL and let me tell you, the NTC3 was ripping!!! pleanty of go-juice in the straights and good torque on the infield. I do not know if you have ever been to Ft. Myers but the straight is very loong! Well, maybe we need to take into consideration the Roll Out fo the car. We use foam tires over here.

I guess I am going to put my 05R to the test next month at Full Throttle SpeedWay in FL for the Region Four Race. I have heard that track is HUGE! I will let you know then!

Peace!
