Lipo's in your starter box

Has anyone put lipo's in their starter box yet? I am getting ready to rebuild my sportwerks box for my trip to Florida, and thought lipo's might be nice... Less weight, better capacity, etc.... A few questions, can they handle the load, does anyone make a cutoff for 2 packs in a series? Any recommendations on a charger that won't break the bank?

Or are we just better off sticking with the old technology?

Thx,

Im using that orion Avionics pack in my starter boxes. The batteries work fine Aaron, just the problem i guess is a charger.

For the charger use a Superbrain 989. It charges lipos with ease and you can charge two batteries at once!

I put the Orion Avionics Lipo SLP4800 mah 14.8 v 4S-1P Battery in my mugen style starter box. Works great, and feels stronger than the two 3300 packs that I had in before. I tried the same battery in my JL starter box with one motor, and within seconds the motor began sparking heavily while billowing smoke. Too much doo for only one battery, but good on 2. Maybe it will work on boxes with one motor that are made for 12 Volt batteries.:tire::tire::tire:

2 7.4v packs

1 Attachment(s)
i made two 7.4v packs with balance charge plugs and rated at 4400 mah each then wired in series in my box. thats 16.8v of crank power when fully charged. they will last you the whole weekend easily. no where near the weight of a gell cell and more "umph" then nimh.

worth the investment/upgrade if its within your means.

nitrothugg,
Are you powering a large 12v electric motor, or the 720/540 size motors??

its a 720 size in both boxes i have now

What lipo pack would you guys recommend for the JL starterbox? Uriah said that a 14.8V, 4800 is too much for it. What voltage/mamp would you guys use?

HT batteries has a lipo set up especially for Starter boxes.

A 7.4 volts 3200mAh will be the perfect Lipo set up for the JLR starter box.
You don't need a 14.8 volts Lipo as the JLR starter box operates on 7.2 volts only.

i just did a mugen starter box with 2 3300 7.4 volt FMA batteries(2cell) and got the FMA 4S procell charger used today for the first time and it kicked ass no drop in power what so ever and all i did was cut off the old tamiya style connectors and put deans connectors i'll try to post a pic later;)

I have two starter boxes with these. They are great. It weighs about 1/3rd the weight of 2 stick packs. I purchased this charger.

But I think that 14.8V is too much for only 1 motor that the JLR starter box has... Im looking for prices on the 7.4V 3200+ and above... Cheapest I have seen is 7.4V, 3300mah, at $44 in rc-mushroom. Anyone seen em cheaper than this?

Exactly! JLR starter box is designed for a 7.2 volt operation (2 x 6 cell pack in parallel) the reason it has 2 x 6 cell packs is for increased capacity (parallel) not increased voltage, unlike other boxes that are designed to be operated on a 14.4 volt (2 x 6 cell packs in series)
