I race a Serpent 950r with a Centax II clutch. I was able to pick up a clutch from a Mugen MRX4R that I will install on my backup engine...just in case

I know the two clutches are not identical and can't swap most of the parts (three weights vs four, etc), but do these clutches setup the same?

Also, there are two parts that would be good to know if they can be interchanged: the clutch bell and the pinions. Can someone confirm this is do'able?

How about this, then. Can anyone tell me if the flywheel collet is identical or interchangeable?

I believe the collet is generic, I have used the centex II on my XR8 without issues. What I found out with the centex II is that the change of gears is seamless and that sometimes make me think if the has changed or not

I'm pretty sure that the pinions are not interchangeable, or at least between the old MRX3 and the 950. about the clutchbell no idea.

Serpent clutch bells have a different thread then the Mugen clutch bell. Also the bearings used between the two are completely different, so if you were to swap just the bells, you would have to reshim them.

is the angle that makes contact with the shoe the same for both clutch bells?

it definately look different on the angle of contact, left looks deeper than the right.

Hi Guys

Does anyone have more info on how to setup the Kyosho Evolva clutch? The one that comes with the kit.

I am familiar with the Serpent Centax system and I think that this system works differently for clutch gap and end play. Question is, where do you place shims for the above?

The clutch shoe to clutchbell angles are the same (45 degrees). The bell on the left is a Serpent style and the bell on the right is a Mugen style. Serpent bells just cover more of the clutch shoe assembly. Centaxs' setup all very much the same. I setup the outside shims(outside the thrust washer) till the clutchbell is the distance I want from the large shoe (close but not touching). Then when that is set I will usually end up with slack between the inner bearing and the pieces mounted on the shaft. Shim that area till your clutchbell is stable without preloading the inner bearings. That is your total stack height. Now if the bell is too close, you can remove an outer shim and add it to the inner stack. If you seem to have no room for shims then your collet behind your flywheel is too long and is moving the "stack height" too far down your shaft. Try a shorter collet and you should gain length on the shaft to insert shims.
