I know some people like to use infrared temp readers, but quite honestly I can't see spending $80 bucks on a digital thermometer. Are the on board temp sensors a good buy? I believe they attach around the head and sit somewhere on the car and give you realtime readings.

What are the pros and cons of using an onboard system like that?

Extra weight, finding a place to put it in the chassis, another batt. needed. One good hit in the same location and you have to spend another $40 for a new one. I see no need for them on board.

on board sensors arent as good, ive been told they give bad read outs or they could be wrong by about 20 degrees

I agree with bbntc3 .

I don't want to spend $80 Ir thermometer too so I just bought this(see pic). Its almost the same price as the radioshack one but comes with case and battery. Plus it reads the minimum and maximum temp thats why I like it. Also the onboard temp adds up to my cars weight. Hope this helps.

Where is that one available...I don't think they're avail. over here in the U.S. It seems as it's only distributed in Europe?

you know buying those for more than one car isn't work it cause one infarred thermometer will work for multiple car and the onboards wont, atleast not with out taking th body off

this is where I bought mine.
like corvettecrazy said u can only use on board temp on one cars engine. U have to remove it and put it in ur another car to measure its engine temp. Not like Infrared where u just have to point it on every engines head that u want to get the temp.

The readouts on the comparison chart show it to be fairly consistant with the other 2 units they tested.
