So, the DM-1 continues its downward spiral in my estimation..

Wanted to try a different engine, so planned on trying my Go GXR 5-port. The engine has an Associated RC8/RC8T alu clutch. For whatever reason, 3 5x8 bearings would NOT fit. So, I spent two hours trying to find the perfect shimming balance with two bearings up front, and finally got to where I thought it was good. Good mesh too..

So, just took her out, and the engine was going really well - faster than the Mach(alu clutch has a lot to do with it too I'm sure..) Anyway, was all good. Then boom, no shift, I look at the 2-speed, sure enough, 2nd gear spur gear is toasted... 'Bout half-way through the second tank. WTF?!..

Anyway, second time this has happened - though the first time the CB bearings were toast*.. And yes, I know how to shim, and I know how to set a mesh. When I took the Mach out this morning, I saw that pretty much all the bearings in the CB - the normal-size one, and the three up-front, were toast.. They had a grand total of six tanks on them.

Anyway, I DO have the 2nd-gear SG on hand. Is that all that's likely to be toasted. I took the 2-speed out, and saw that the 1st speed will turn with the cups - the 2nd doesn't.. So do I just need to change the gear, or is there something else in there likely to be fxxxed?

What a PIA...

* ps The engine is still in the car, and the CB is spinning freely - feels and sounds great...

Damn, Herr. Either you're not doing something right or
there is a problem in the two-speed unit. Loose bearing,
one-way bearing or it's not built correctly.
Are you planning to visit your sis here in Va. anytime soon?
If so bring your cars and I'll help you set those muthas up.
I run alot of different engines on my DM1's, CRE JL.21, CRE JPX.21,
RB 928, AB Modded P9, CRE Insane GO 7 port, modded MaxPower Extreme
8 port to name a few. Never have I torn up the two-speed gears
and that also includes running on the dirt oval track.
Yes, I've ran the gears until the teeth were worn almost off,
but hey, they are plastic and considered consumables and
do take alot of abuse.

Well, I do think the two DM-1 1/7 kits I got had been sitting around for a good 3-4 years in some Czech hobby shop(dude sold them at auction on German ebay..), but I don't know how sitting in a box can make the CB and 2-speed such a PIA...

Maybe it's my driving style.. Once the engine's warmed up I like to go for it.. But if this is normal then this car is not meant to be driven hard..

I've had Savages, LST2's, truggies, a buggy, a Kyosho onroader, have an SC8, etc.. So I think I know how to shim a clutch and set a gear mesh.. But this thing just isn't hanging..

I have a NIB 1/8 Spec version still unopened in the box, but IDK if it's worth keeping now, especially with NO local parts support..

Anyway, hopefully the Kyosho Evolva CB and pinions will make life easier.. Should be here soon.. Hopefully all I need to do for the 2-speed is just change the SG and nothing else intneral is fxxxed...

If those Evolva pinion gears are aluminum, you had better
check your gear mesh often. When I ran my R40, the aluminum
pinoin gears wore out quite fast.

Wow! Herr, you got a whole parts car sitting right in front of
you. I'd be throwin some servos, battery, receiver and an engine
on that Spec.. She is just waitin for you to pull the trigger on her.
You can never have enough spare parts for your cars. What with
almost a dozen different rc cars and trucks, I stock more parts
for them than the local shops have on hand and it makes me feel
good when they call me looking for a part.

Herrsavage,
Does your engine have a pull start attached to it? If so, check the clearance of the lower rear pull start attachment screws on the engine. I had the an STS .28 engine and the pull start assembly was touching the inner edge of the chassis. It was not easily visible/detectible after setting the gear mesh and tightening the engine mount screws. After running say 5 + minutes one of the spur gears would strip. The engine would vibrate off of the edge of the chassis cutout, changing the gear mesh and allowing the spur gear to strip. I fixed it by removing about 1 mm of chassis material off of the upper edge corner where the interference occurred.
My car was a brand new DM1 Spec, purchased in October of '08. It looks like the newer chassis have more clearance in this area.
The STS .28' pull start case stuck out further than the Force .28 engine pull start.

If it'll take mine running on 6s, it'll take any abuse a nitro can throw at it.
