The future is now, as it's been 2+ years already since its release.

They've been available on 10th scale for quite some time (~US$30 for the valve kit) though never quite took off...

Yep, been around a while and never took off. I think they require too much testing and setup for the average RC racer.
That's a very scaled down version of how forks on motocross bikes were valved for several years. Now everything is shifting to air forks.
If someone can build air shocks for RC that use air pressure rather than oil and springs, they will be on to something. I think it can be done for compression, shocks are too small to get the valving in the bottom for rebound though. So we will still need to retain the springs.

actually in my opinion they are easier to test and set up... no messing with pistons and oil... just change oil wt. and there is a noticible difference then change a spring to fine tune. I just put a set on my scx-60cf and right out the pkg with the starting set up I think they are good. I am going to fine tune with 1 step lower on spring rate so I might get a little more roll in the corners. but again I found easier to tune than changing pistons.

That's some very cool stuff I hope it gets figured out.
Even a magnetic oil would be awesome like in the 1:1 cars. Hook it up to channel 4 on the rx and have on the fly shock adjustment.
