How do you know your diff gear mesh is correct?

I like to have no play side to side, but also no preload. Then I'll push the diff away from the pinion by hand and rock the input driveshaft and feel for just a hair of play. If it's too loose I'll put a shim on the diff gear side, if it's too tight, away from the diff gear.
The reason I push the diff is because under power the pinion pushes the diff away. I also use Mobil 1 red synthetic grease on the gears.
