i would stay with ae big bores i liked there shocks real will but i did change the standoffs, i used mugen parts that would fit mbx4 rr or xr and i think the mbx5 are the same as i used because i had them and they held up good and didnt bend. I also put the screw on backwards so they would fit the shock cap better so when i had to take the shock off the screw came off the tower but stayed in the shock.

This is a difficult one for me. I will need to order all the stuff from ebay, so I need to be sure. Does the AE big bores fit directly onto the RC8 or do I need to modify something?

I had the Hong Nors on my RC8 - absolutely fantastic.. I got the AE big bores for my SC8. I think with both you just need a longer mount and screw on the top.. If you order them, try to order the mounts for the Hong Nor too - shouldn't be too expensive.

Since the shocks are obviously fatter, they have to stick out more from the shock tower. Thus the longer mount and screws.. Could be that just a screw and some jerry-rigged spacers would work - not sure on that though.. Been a while.. Have pics somewhere, but no time just now...

If I had to choose, I would say the Hong Nors are slightly better quality.. I miss mine(sold with the buggy..)

One thing to keep in mind though is, there's a hell of a lot more in the way of spare Associated parts out there than Hong Nor.. I just liked the latter better..

AE big bores are a direct fit on the RC8 - no other parts needed.
Just be sure to mount the blue top bushings the correct way: the "deeper" part of the shock cap facing away from the tower.
Great shocks, btw...
