I don't remember the cartridge number for the North cartridges but we welded in completely enclosed areas with welding fumes and grinding particulates in the air, with the North cartridges we used when you breathed in you could smell the cartidge and it would have a sweet smell to it and when that smell went away it was useless and ready for a change. We would weld and grind with these on for 10 hours a day on a 12 hour shift 6 days a week and I might have changed the filters once every 2 months but I also used the North mask with the optional piggyback system with the hoses that go behind your back but the cartridges, hoses and the mask took a ton of abuse. In fact I still have the same mask and piggyback system that I got way back in 2001 and used until my accident in Aug.2008 and the cartridges that were on it are still being used by my Dad for when he does his wood cutting in his small shed because he doesn't like breathing in wood dust, he's been using them for the past 2 years when I gave it to him with spare cartridges and he's still using the original set of cartridges that I put on it for him.

FWIW - The reason you can smell the Nitro and Fumes is because it either didn't fit properly or the Cartridges were past their life expectancy. I'm going with the later. Most people have some unrealistic expectation that these respirators are meant to work for months-on-end, and never replace them.
The cartridges were new, maybe 1 hour on them before I snagged it. The mask was tight too. I don't know if the fumes I was smelling were from fumes that got stuck in my nose before I put it on, psychosomatic OR just simply that I could smell them (about 80% less) then I would without the mask. Drop starts especially...

Yeah, that is a bit over the top. My sinuses are sensitive, but damn I could go into space with that thing. Not only do it stop nitro fumes, but also protects against Anthrax, Ebola, and Mustard Gas! Although, that mask would probably be the ticket for using the bathroom at my local tracks. Some RC racers have some serious intestinal issues that need to be looked at by a trained medical professional.
