Questions?? My Schumacher Menace isn't shifting into gear.HELP

I just recently got a Schumacher Menace used off Cragslist. When I got it ready to run and ran it I noticed that I wasn't hearing it shifting. Me and my Dad took the RC car on the street and ran my dads full sized car behind it to see what the RC cars top speed was. We got a top speed of around 52 mph and Schumacher claims that this thing does 70+. This seems to prove that it defiantly does not shift into third and probably not second ether. This is my first experience with shifting RC cars and I was wondering if you guys could give me any advice on how to fix the three speed on this thing without having to replace the whole assembly.
Thanks

52mph would be damn quick in first gear. If you hold your menace off the ground and give it full throttle you should be able to hear it shift through the gears if it is working properly. Listen carefully, you'll hear a split-second drop in tone as it shifts and it happens very very quickly.
