You forgot a starter box, rx battery, possibly a clutch as well. Add those in and your more likely over $600 plus shipping.

I can do you one better.

A Brand New Losi 8ight 2.0 rtr racer can be had for under $600 NEW shipped, and it includes a very good .21 engine, excellent DX3S 2.4gig radio, very good starter box AND a 1400mah rx reciever battery. The only thing needed is fuel.

What kind of setup is he looking at? 8th scale? 10th scale? SC? Buggy? Truggy? 2wd? 4wd?

Im sure lots of people can do better, LOL. Its wasnt showing how cheap you can do because if thats the case if you do things right and take your time im sure you can find something really cheap. Friend just bought losi 2.0 race ready for 285 because the guy needed to make car payment or it was going to be towed away. So yeeaaaaaaaa.

Taxman, with your expierience you had previously with rc's and the budget you have you'll deffinetly get a nice racer for yourself and son. For sure keep your eye out in the SALE-TRADE section here for some great deals.

Just as an idea, you can get a Traxxas Slash 4x4 Platinum (no radio, battery or charger)brand new for about $319 shipped.

You can get a Traxxas Slash 4x4 Ultimate(which includes a 2.4gig radio, 7c nimh battery and charger) for about $425 shipped new. Just to give you a baseline.

if all it needs is a radio you can pick up a ok radio for about 150 bucks might be worth doing the slash. how ever i think i would spend a little extra and go with the new losi sc 4x seems like they are killing the competion at my local track

Don't start with a truggy, start with a buggy.
It will make you a better driver. Starting with truggy with cause you to develop bad driving habits that will be hard to break later on.

I also bought my truggy used and saved a ton of cash (paid $120 for roller). Plus I got a truckload of spare parts with it. Then got slightly used LRP .28 + pipe for $80 from a racer who quit the hobby and took the electronics from my Savage monstertruck. When you are not sure you like the hobby yet, then buying used is a great way to try it out without losing money.
