I've used all three: Lipo, Gel, and stick. Lipo wins hands down - for all the reasons stated above (power, torque, weight)
My lipo is 5350 mAmps/20C and after a full day of practicing, I end up putting around 1500-2200 mAmps back in. The 2200 mAmps was after a day of turning over a brand new Werks B5 and B6.
Good luck.

I use a pair of 2S LifeP04 batteries of 4500mah.works great.
They are way safer.

There is no really danger to use LiPos as long as you charge them at 1C and don't short circuit them.

imo dont use any crap off that site(hobbyking). i ordered 2 4s batteries from them and also 2 2s batteries. one of the 4s didnt work when i got it. They wanted me to send it back to them(which isnt unreasonable) but it would of cost me the price of a battery off of them to send it. after only 3-4 months of use 2 of the 2s batteries have lost there punch and so has the 4s. i went to protek and you can get one for about 40 bucks and ive had zero issues with it, and they have a good warranty. I had a 2s that i discharged to much , i admitted it to them and they still are warranting the battery. Just remember you get what you pay for.
Great performance and price from protek though!

+++1...here as well.
This is almost more important than anything with lipo's...no matter the quality.
Always make sure that you dont go below 3.6v per cell. And always store them at around 60%-70% capacity. DO NOT store at full capacity for any length of time.
Lipo's are the ticket but you do need to take proper care or you will end up tossing them.

Get a Lipo Buzzer Alarm and fit it to your starter box as well - cheap and can save the battery !

My buddy and I use the Venom starter box battery, cranks over just about everything including your 1:1 car.
