I've been doing restoration on vintage BMX bikes for many years and Oxalic Acid is the stuff you want. No scrubbing or anything, just dip and rinse. Check this out -

Good idea. It works great. Light buffing with a wire wheel on a dremel works good too.....

I have a small brass wire wheel in my dremel box for soft cleaning .
