tapered pistons vs. non tapered

I am curious about the effects of tapered pistons on a shock compared to the standard non tapered. What does the taper create in the shock?

Taper down....quicker rebound.

The tapered end can be positioned down for fast rebound, or up for standard rebound and a faster compression rate.
