Glow plug question
I have a almost new RB s-5 motor with a long header and OS 2040 pipe. and I'm having glow plug issues. I am having problems keeping the glow plugs working. The plugs are not distorded or broken but after a tank or 2 they stop working. This happen to the RB plug that came with the motor and a #6 McCoys. I also used a MC59 and that last a while longer but still died. The motor is smoking on the top at Full throttle. The motor is a little rich on the bottom still but not sure if thats causing the problem or not. Please help.

Maybe a shim is needed?

According to the book that came with the motor, it only needs to be shimmed if using of 25%.

i think i read somewhere that people are running McCoy 8 or O'donnell 99 plugs... also check the play in the rod, i was having the same issue and the crank was out of tolerance and was popping glow plugs left and right. it took my 5 glow plugs to figure it out.

it is 99% one of two causes, either your running lean on top or you have too much compression, i would add a copper shim aswell as lean the bottom 1/2hr and richen the top an 1hr

i read that also, he motor has about 3/4 of a gallon on it. They motor is still tight. I was wondering if the rich bottom is putting the cold plugs out. The MC59 worked all thru break in and for the first few heats before it died. The 2 cold plugs lasted less than a tank each.

could be, I personally had your same problem and would go through 3-4 plugs a day. my temps were ok but it was drasticlly lean on top that would burn the plug up after a tank or so.

Were your plugs breaking or discolored, pushed inside or anything?

How much nitro? 30% you might need to add a shim.
Try colder plugs. MC8 would be worth a try. MC59 is a very hot plug that wont take much abuse.

I tried a mc6 and it last about 2 tanks. The mc59 is the only thing that i have found that last very long. Its really got me confused.

what im using, is a odonnell #100 meduim plug in my s5 just dont run the bottom to rich or they will go in no time. and im running 20% race blead
i know also, the odonnell #77 plug is for low nitro content at 10% to 20% but it says its for 1/10 cars so i dont know.

MC59 is too hot for that engine, try an MC9 or 8

What fuel are you using? I had a similar problem with my FMS. It would keep fouling plugs whenever I let it load up. I was using Sidewinder 25% pro blend which from what I was told, is all castor based oil. I tried some world's blend and no more problems. So you could be using fuel with too much castor.
