I bought the RTR in March and am still trying to get it to race roller quality. I'm hooked on racing tho. Had i'd known i'd like it this much i'd of definitely bought everything separately. Live and learn. If you are making the step from basher to racer you'll spend alot more racing. You will want to keep your car maintained to stay competitive. I'd say if you have NOTHING RC related and want to race competitively get about 2 grand saved and that's just one class. You'll need spare parts, shock oils, diff oils, bearings, tools, dremels, temp gauge, shade tent, pit table, gas, plugs, clutches, blah blah. This hobby will 5 dollar you to death! Racing is a great time and worth it to me.

a grand come on it spend about , $900 all together and its competive for club racing at least.

Losi RTRs, plus servos, fuel, a few tire options, and a few spares. About a grand.
It comes out to more:

Add hex/nut drivers, batteries for the box, charger, power supply, set-up tools, extra electronics, extra RX batt...$$$

talk to your hobby shop.
mine just told me 2 days ago that there was a dealer 200 off coupon losi rtr's.
he was going to sell me an 8ight 2.0e for 550$ or 400$ with no electronics.

perhaps u can use that on a nitro model

now thats a good deal if they would keep the stock electronics out of a nitro then head aches are solved.

You should take your $500 and buy as much good stuff as you can right now. Then start saving up for the other stuff you need and buy it as you can.It will take you longer to get to the track but will be worth it in the long run.Unfortunately racing 1/8 nitro isnt cheap to start out.

You can get into a losi 8ight 2.0 buggy for less than $500 if you do your homework and find good deals. I bought a roller from here for $175 shipped to my door, it needed electronics and a motor. The motor was $50 for a brand new go engine 7 port on ebay. The servos i paid $130 for 2 ace servos (ds1313 for throttle and 1015 for steering), all that was left was a radio. I bought a dx3s with rx for $100 shipped. In total it was $455 for a really nice setup. I'll be upgrading parts to race roller specs alittle at a time, but for now it flies and is really durable. You could buy new for $530 on the net at a few online shops, but its up to you.

When i bought the roller it looked brand new with a couple scratches on the bottom chassis. I knew i'd put scratches on it once i got it, so i didn't care.

The nice thing is when i bought my truggy race roller i already had the radio, so all i needed was a rx, servos and an engine.

I managed to buy 3 go engines from ebay for $160 shipped, 1 was new, 1 was barely broke in (less than a gallon on it) and 1 was worn, but the worn one i sent in to be repinched and it runs like new. So when i bought my truggy i already had the engine to throw on it, so all i needed was a rx and servos, plus i have a spare engine in case one of them goes out on me
