There is alot of factors to take into consideration. Altitude, outside temp, glow plug, fuel, gearing, track conditions etc. You will not get a solid answer.Tune to were it runs good and maybe ask someone at the track to take a look.

my v spec runs at 220 to 240 thats good genral temp and take the temp at the head pointing to the top of plug was what i was told and i agree with token also, people at the track are willing to help out alot

This is a loaded question and you WILL get BS answers. I asked a bunch of people at my track what their motors run at and they all say oh about 210 to 220. I kept wondering why mine was running at like 265 all day. So i got smart and went and temped a bunch of motors as they came off the track after the main. NO ONE was under 255. Granted it was 100 outside air temp too. Tune to performance and smoke first then use temp gauge just to make sure you not running over 280 imo. It'll drive you nuts trying to tune to a temp.

I have run races where I never got over 180 but it ran good. I have also ran where my engine would run around 260 - and be dialed. It really varies.

Man like Mark from powerhousercperformance told me. Throw the temp gun away. Tune for performance and listen to the engine. I ran a speed engine last weekend on a small track and it sounded great no lean bog or high idle, great smoke I thought it was perfect and then it came off the track at 280 so I started messing with it and well I should have left it alone. These engines can handle up to 300 degrees is what I was told. It just depends on if you have it too lean or not. So look, listen and feel the performance. No high lean idle or lean bog and good smoke and power sounds great to me. Everyone always wants to know what the temp is??? If the ambient temp is 35 F then the engine will run colder. If you tune an engine to the 240-260 range that would be like 300+ on a hot 90+ F day. So tune to performance. I know its a hard habit to break. I have my own issues with it too but tune for performance.

Tune with sound and smoke. If the engine is running good and producing good smoke(this will vary depending on what fuel you run), than leave it alone. Really, the only reason to have a temp gun is for break-in and just to reference after a run.

I was always a needle turner and had horrible experiences w/ my engines. Once I stopped turning needles to get the temp I wanted, I had better luck.
