Default How hot is too hot?

I just picked up my first nitro, a losi 8ight-T 2.0 with the .28 engine. After a
half gallon (of 20%) fuel of breaking in I'm still about 4 1/2 turns out on the main needle and I'm running around 280. I keep richining er up but it keeps getting up to 280. I'm on a small tight track with 2 small straits. Is 280 ok? Is 4 1/2 turns out normal? Thanks

Seems a little on the hot side but what is the air temp and your high altitude will make things different talk to some of the fast guys at your track

280 could be a temp gauge that's lying to you, don't trust it. Unless you have an Exergen black box temp probe then ignore temp's. What you want to look for is an engine that's happy, that takes off without any hesitation or sputtering and can almost instantly settle into an idle when you let off the throttle and stop. If your engine is tuned correctly and you don't have an under-sprung clutch making the engine work too hard then you're engine will not overheat.

Read this, it will help you to understand more.....

It was about 68 degrees today. I'm at 5000 ft altitude. I use to tune 2 stroke motorcycle engines and they always required less fuel at this altitude.

I have used two different temp guns and still get 280. That's The point when I decide to turn it off, it might get even hotter.

As long as it's smoking & making good power 280 is not too bad . Some engines only run well around 270 - 280 . I bet as it gets a little more fuel through it & loosens up it won't run as hot . i always tune by sound & smoke then ck . temp to make sure it not extremely hot .

How much smoke is coming out? If you got a decent amount of white smoke coming out the exhaust i wouldnt worry about it.

Now i'm a little concerned . I thought it ran that temp . consistently . Be sure & ck . for air leaks such as , a tiny hole in the fuel line or a loose tank seal . Read the tuning bible & make sure the bottom end is not too lean also .

go to all stock needle setting. make sure you have the correct idle got. .7mm or so than take and tune your lsn so when you pinch the fuel line 1mm for the nipple on the motor it shuts off in 7 seconds(this is for a cold engine) and than tune your hsn from there and see where your at.

Smokes coming out of a turn, can't see much down the strait. Same amount of smoke and power the last full turn out from 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 turns. The manual said start with 2 1/2 does 4 1/2 make sense?

Thanks I'll try that. I did the pinch trick but much further from the nipple.

I'm confused about the start idle at .7mm part? I read that on the tuners bible 1mm I believe bud didn't get what it meant?

sounds like the bottom might be too fat and the top too lean. at 5000 feet the factory settings become more of an idea than an instruction.

if you are tuning for smoke, make it so the same amount (roughly) is coming out throughout the throttle band
