Default This engine look "reconditioned" to you?

Let's say you buy an Italian mill used based on the description of

Quote:
This engine has recently been re-pinched by RayAracing, where the sleeve, piston and button were re-conditioned. The engine has a tight pinch and needs to be broken in. The engine has a new clutch and flywheel set up on it and it is ready for install. I am also including the matched novarossi tuned exhaust.
Now let's say the engine showed up with a worn flaking ceramic main bearing and looks like this, would you call that reconditioned? Please let me know if I am expecting too much from that description.

+1 on never buying used engines, and if that is reconditioned....what did it look like BEFORE it was re-conditioned? I mean....it could have been a lot worse looking. I had my an upper conrod bushing shatter on a cold day and it tore up my Piston and head button. If I re-conditioned them...they probably would have looked on par with your pictures though.

So on that note...I don't know if I would call the seller a liar based on those pics, but I personally would have expected it to look a bit better than that....did you get pics prior to purchasing it?

"Horse sh...". I've bought several used Nova's and they were in great shape. The seller makes the description, not the engine. I have always ran the same engine in practice that I run on race day, but always used a "previously used" cheap version of my $350 race engine to practice with so I buy used Nova's for mid week practices and have since 2006 or so. This is the first one that has shown up with crater valley on top of it. There are plenty of honest sellers selling good engines.

Damn.... did he have a itrader or ebay rating? I buy and sell. I give a discription of the condition of the engine and will back it up w/pics... I want my trade rating to stay 100%.

Shit like that ruins it for the rest of us that try to be above board and honest in our dealings.

It's going to Dion's in a couple hours and we'll see what the damage estimate is. I buy my new Nova's from his shop and he is the man on the Nova engines.

Does the engine have good compression?

It looks like it was run some after it was 'reconditioned'.

Is that oil on top of the piston or detonation pitting? 1st pic looks like that; the 2nd looks fine.

If the top of the piston is 'shiny' at all, then I'd say Ray did pinch it because the tops of his pistons look polished when you get a unit back.

Good luck...

As far as used engines; I say it's up to the seller.

I've been had once on a cheap engine. Got nothing out of it. Was advertised as a 'just broken in' stock engine; it was a hack-job mod and run a bit more than broken in. I wasn' t happy...

On the other hand, I've sold one used engine on here, took pics of it apart and laid out and ran it immediately prior to selling it to ensure everything was ok; everyone was happy.

so far I have had good luck with used mills. My question on this one is does it have any compression. Only reason I as is one of my rb motors had a ciol come out of the plug and beat the top of the piston and the head button all to hell but did not scar up the side of the piston or the sleave. Motor still rins fine to this day.

Yeah, it just looks like it has a BUNCH of something on there, but not pits. Wipe that thing down.

In the 2nd pic the piston looks clean. Again, I think it just needs to be cleaned up a bit.

D's the man on all this stuff.... Between him and his brother is a library full of knowledge. You know he has done over 500 mods since he opened shop... He kept my P5's screaming.

having pics or video of the product is proof of some what description but still imo there are so many motors in the market that yoj can buy new w/a pipe in a price range of $199-$250 ..why buy a used one? these motors don't come with carfaxes..lol
