Default well

Get him a buggy. They last longer and easier to work on bashing or racing....

If he were planning on racing it I would try to talk him into getting the buggy. I don't know how it is where you live but in Florida the 1/10 truck racing has disappeared. Tracks that still race 1/10 truck are lucky to get 5 racers.

If he just wants something to screw around with, I'd look into a HPI Savage.

Big enough to bash around with (NOT RACE) and works about anywhere.
