the flop test is bogus. My vspec will flop around a second and my ninja a little longer. And they scream to high heaven.

I used to worry about compression all the time when i started. But don't. Worry about

keeping clean air filters on your engine.

Use after run oil

learn how to tune

use a high quality fuel

preheat when you still have pinch.

use good glo plugs

use the right pipe

do not run it too lean or blubery rich. (richer is better btw)

Oh,

throw away your temp gun!!!!







ok, not really. But certainly don't rely on it. Use google as much as you can. Read and learn how to tune. Watch youtube, read the break in bible. If you have to, ask question on here but find a thread if you can. You can pm me if you need something, and i would be glad to help. I annoyed the crap out of people on here when i was learning, but i was not afraid to ask questions. Now there is not much i cannot do.


also the one thing that helped me the most of all is this flow chart.

The "flop" test is a very rough estimate of piston to liner seal quality. The problem as stated already is it will be different when the engine is at running temp. Also when the engine is in your hand you are compressing air. When the engine is running you are compressing a mist of fuel, oil and air. This is a good thing and probably why the flop test has any validity at all because if it can hold compression with air it will be better with with the fuel mix.

Indeed the cold condition says nothing about the hot condition but my test does work to get an indication.

Ofcourse the oil content does play a role in this, more oil gives a better running engine on a (almost) worn out P/S set.
