If you connect the complete shock with the spring then it would only tell the spring tension not the viscosity of fluid, or would it matter?

I have one and love it. Its a good way to tell if you springs are getting soft as well rebound with out the spring on. Its a nice little tool to have . Just my 2 cents

It's not a "must have", you can still match shocks pretty damn closely without it, but it's a good tool to have if you are a perfectionist or really want a precise setup.
