A Little un called for this & an un necessary attack, please keep these sort of opinions to yourself as its not the sort of advice any new racer needs to hear. I do allot of work on the Xray site & the same as these guys are only trying to help by giving sound advice on years of knowledge from equipment they use & know. THe forums will always end up in a free for all on what you feel is best, no matter who you are your post will always come across the same as any other when every one chirps in.

Your description on pulling an engine apart was good & i also remove the conrod from the crank with needle nose pliers but delicately so not to damage the conrod, cant see any other way that wont also have other related problems. But agree with Integra if your not confident or have enough knowledge to take it apart ask someone that can. Any real pro at this will explain what they are doing & looking for & pass on this knowledge.
