Questions?? big block engine temps??

hey guys i got an AE .28 and want to know what your guys average temps are, yes i know temps vary engine to engine i just want a ball park area, cuz my motor ran 260 ish for about 5 min then spiked to 300 even afer i richened it, so i shut her down and here i am, plus it like 45 dagrees outside so the temps should not be this high.... air leak maybe? ket me know what you think, this is my first big block i am used to smallies. that temp around 230, would that carrie over to the big?

with it being in the 40s outside you will have to run the engine richer then in the summer time..set needles to factory settings and re tune..make sure the temp gun lense is clean, also do the spit test as a quick reference..if temp gun says 300 and u do the spit test and it does not boil off instantly then you are not running at 300 degrees, you see what I am saying? also make sure that there is a slight trail of smoke from the exhuast. hope this helps

ya the motor is puking out smoke, so thats why i was puzzled, i will try the spit method today to check the temp gun.

got it, it was a the temp gun lens, it read 290 then i spit on the head and it took about 3-4 seconds to disapear, so i cleaned the lens and bingo 232, i also had a small tear in the presure line at the pipe. thanks

260 for those engines with a real temp gun (exergen dx series) is just fine

glad you got it taken care of...yeah 260-270 is about normal for them engines. as long as there is smoke and good power (no bogging) then you should be fine.
