Default Honest input on engines needed

I've been eyeballing some engines in the $2-300 price range the last week and was curious about the difference. I've been the reading the individual threads but each one seems to claim it's the best (not surprising, who wants to believe they have a POS).

Engines in question

NR +4
Werks B5
Trinity ExTech
Reedy

Based on the threads, they're all the same All of them either get 7 mins per tank or 11 (with an occasional "I get 13...").

So what's a guy to choose? 9 honest minutes seems like a reasonable amount of runtime. The track I typically run on is medium sized with a few smaller jumps right out of corners. I want a decent bottom with a strong mid and decent top end with a smooth power band.

I imagine this is just like the "which buggy" threads where you can just flip a coin and be fine with the results.

ive heard great things about the nova 4 motor. ive talked to a couple that run it and they are getting 10 min with it. ive heard some good things about the B5 as well.. But on the other hand ive heard a lot of bad things about the reedy engine. not real bad but bad enough that i wouldnt get one till they get the bugs figured out.

but i would reccomend looking into the jammin .21 engine.i know its not one on your list but its an awesome engine. it idles forever and has TONS of power out of the cornors and will hang with the the "best" engines on the straights. ive seen people getting 8 min on a fairly large track. i was getting 7 on the same track because i like running my engines sorta rich. but on a smaller track you could definatly get 9+ min with it. the jammin is only $220. and some of my friends that run it are on their 10th gallon and still running strong. im at/around 1 1/2 gallon and i still cant turn the engine over while mounted in the chassis. im still running the same glow that i broke the engine in with as well. its a great engine. i would highly suggest it to you.

IMO the Jpx is too much for buggy...even stock....i would look into something like a JX ninja or Nova.

Run time is 100% driver dependent....1 guy might get 10 while the next get's 8....its all in the tune and how you pull trigger.

Nova +4- $300
Mugen Jx21- 350
RB Hobby 9- 230
RB Junior 9- 180
Novarossi N21b- $150

Got straights and aren't concerned about fuel mileage:
Novarossi Toro nero- 350
RB WS9- 350

My top picks in order. The +4 rocks as a race engine.

I'm biased against Werks, Trinity, Reedy, Orion, GRP etc. They just seem like flavors of the week and I've Never seen anyone really do well with any of the engines you mentioned other than the +4.

I stick with RB, Novarossi, and higher end OS's (like the Jx21 )

I have seen people do pretty good with the REEDY, but when it comes to engines - Im OS to the core - Love the Vspec and have never been beaten, lapped or could not make a jump because lack of power. I like the old school fav - RB - NOVA - OS. they know engines

Clockwork Racing Track tuned JPX .21 $270.00 ( add $40 for break in service)..... I take the JPX 21 and alter the powerband to be smoother, have better top end and better mileage.....Combine with a JP4 tuned pipe and you will have all the power and RPM you will ever need, idle forever and tune very easily...As well the engine will sound outright awesome and turn heads at your track...

Here is a video of one of my customers playing with the engine in his Turmoil Buggy..This engine is 2 seasons old and still running strong......

My last 2 cars were powered by Nova and I was very pleased so I'll probably go that route again if the quality is still the same. Thanks for the info.

nah that will just make you control it better lol. and be more smooth on the throttlle therefore you'll get better runtime.

Would that be a good thing if you were running a restrictor; more tame while increasing run times?

I have owned all that you mentioned and even the jammin that others mentioned...
the best ones are the B5 and the plus 4
both smooth both awesome runtime
b5 pipes dont really matter and its a 150 bucks cheaper with better support and service, Nova good motor as well but limited to certain pipes to get the max performance out of it and not as good for truggy as the B5
and most important the B5 sounds cooler on the track

The new RB Killer 9 is an awesome mill. I have had 2 NR +4 with no complaints
but the new killer 9 is a better engine feel wise, it was easy to break in and
tune and only 230.00.

I was eyeballing the RB Killer but I dont know anything about that mil. I like the idea of a long stroke but how does it translate that power on track? I'm not familiar with any of those pipes (listed on the A-main link), I'm assuming they're mid-top given the stroke?

the toro can be bought under 300.00...if you look around. and the plus4 can be had for 269.00...

one of the locals tried the b5 and is having issues with it leaning out for no reason? I dont know all he has ran are werks engines and he is having prb. it was great up until the 2 gallon mark? I have not looked at it just what he was saying saturday when he put his b7 back in. prb a bearing or something going bad
