Default makiing my own ramp, any tips/tricks?

hey ive seen tons of posts in various places saying how they made their ramp out of paneling (you know, the old wood paneling from the 80s) but im afraid that i would sail right through it, atleast with my car. i definately want it to be heavy duty. so i was thinking... i have the top of an old desk i used to own. its 1/2 inch thick and 56" long. by about 20-21" wide i was thinking of using a jig saw and using those as the sides, and then getting about 4, 8 foot 2x4's and cutting them up and using them as the ramp surface itself. i dont want it to be very flat, and i also dont want it to go straight up either. im thinking, a gradual curve somwhere between a 35-40 degree angle. any ideas? thanks alot!!!

Default Check this out

I am no good at embedding youtube links but here's the url. I made this ramp from a skateboard ramp and attached some 2X4's to it then screwed a 1/4 inch full sheet of plywood to it with a nasty steep curve. I am the blue nito rustler. I was doing tripple back flips towards the end of the vid.

thats a nasty looking ramp! too bad i have to fit it in an 02' buick century, and only have $20 to spend ha ha. i guess for now ill have to kinda small so i can fit it in the car. i also have to figure out how to get plywood or possibly paneling home in the car ha ha. i was thinking if its cheap enough to buy some vaneer and cover small flat boards, or possibly 2x4's on their side...

a) it fits behind the seats of the century

b) i had an idea to possibly get very long bolts, and use them through the pegboard, and just tighten the bolts to make it steeper. *later project when i have more cash.

thanks alot for all the help!!

well, i was telling my dad about how i liked your ramp, and how i thought it sucked that i couldnt bring home a sheet of plywood or two. and he came over about 20 mins later with this piece of paper. i think its a good idea, but im not sure how sturdy it would be , against just folding up when i hit it. the design is based on the 2x4's and 1/8 in sheets of pegboard i have already...

thanks for your input!!

btw, im using a drill so when i was making the ramp (decided on a hybrid of 2 of the designs ive seen so far) i stripped out 5 phillips head bits. so today, im going to get some square head deck screws, they work alot better with a drill...

You are going to need to put weight on the front of the ramp to keep it from flipping over when the car slams against it. I hammered 12 inch nails into the asphault on mine. You could put something under the front underneath the front like a bag of sand, I didnt want anything off theach side in case I missed the ramp I didnt want to hit the weights.
Does that make sense?

well, i finished it westerday, as literally as i was screwing in the last screw it started pouring.so today, i got it out and tried it out, and it works awesome!! i think i got atleast 15 if not 20 feet of air off this thing. im going to use some silicone on the tires, there cheap tires off a toy rc car from a thrift store so they dont stay on the rims at all so im going to use gasket maker silicone to fill the gap. believe it or not the "V" pattern from toy rc cars works awesome in tall grass.

but anyway, the rims were just spinning in the tires so who knows how much air it will get when they're glued!

heres a link to my photobucket album and i did a video of it.

criticism welcome!!
