Default Engine temp 300+. Help.

I just got a Picco .28 P3 and in the process of breaking it in. The engine temps keep climbing, about a degree a second till I kill it when it goes over 300.

The needle settings were at factory but I turned the HSN needle out from flush about 2 turns to richen it for break-in. There is plenty of smoke coming out of the pipe, with occasional fuel drips. Idle is about 1mm open. I am using 20% nitro, and a R5 plug. What can be wrong?

Thanks!

Had a similar problem.
It turned out to be the battery in the temp gun. Change the battery first. If it still reads the same then try a second device.

are you sure your temp gun is not reading in Celsius

300 degrees Far = 148.8 degrees Celsius

I thought that could be it too but the screen displays 'F after the reading.

It's a new MIP temp guage, so the battery's new. I'll have to borrow someone else's temp gun and compare.

if infact it did run 300 degrees its time to change those bearings!
richen the high speed needle a 1/2 turn and start again.

those things are not worth a penny!

get a duratrax infered temp gauge they are like 20 bucks, and are only like 10 to 15* off an exergen temp gun.

We need to get him and Dreaux together, one is running hot and the other one is cold !

Do the spit test on the head and see how long it takes to boil off, if it is 300°
it will go quick.

i would guess low fuel line pressure or head is not torqued properly

Low fuel pressure may be it. When I pop open the tank, sometimes it stalls. Is this cause of low fuel pressure?

If it does it again take a little spit and put it on the cooling head. If its to hot it will quickly sizzle off. If it just evaporates quickly its perfect. If it takes a while to go away its to cold. Temp guns can be thrown off by shiny stuff. I know alot of guys at the local tracks who use the same method I do.

If you got steady some coming out of track corners then you should have it somewhere in the ballpark. Try the low end setting maby?
