Default Starterbox battery choice

Have a Losi 8ight box. I currently run a 12V gelcell. I need a little more out of the box to turn my motor over. I am considering running two stick packs instead (don't want the lipo expense). Anyone do this? I'm wondering of the effectiveness. Thanks!

2 stick packs will work, but won't they cost you almost as much as a lipo? Lipo is the way to go it makes that little weak Lodi box come alive like you hit the turbo button or something. Just be careful how long you run it on one bump start. I had the engines overheat and short out and drain a lipo because of a stubornd engine I was trying to start. Spend the extra 20 bucks it's worth it. Check out carolinasrc.com they alwYs have great deals going on.

there is no need to buy one of those expensive lipos. i got the ofna truggy stater box (which is a far better box the the losi one) but i got a lipo for it from hobbycity.com they sell all thhe ZIPPY lipos. for a starter box they are all you will ever need. i would recommend a 4s in the 2500-3000MAh range.
good luck

I see a bunch of people recommending 4s LiPo's for starter boxes. Isn't that 17.2V-12V(full-to-empty) on a system designed for 12V?

Is this just a limit found by word-of-mouth? Why not a 5s?

Just looking into why 4s seems okay , but not alot of people really recommend 3s (12.6V-9V) which would be closer to spec.

Not sure how the Losi 350 compares in difficulty to start compared to other motors but 2 3000mah stick packs in my Losi box do just fine. I've never heard it bog and I used it all week plus a race day without charging it. I used $16 Protek packs.

4s is the standard as 3s would not be enough...3S= 12.6 Fully peaked but Would fall short of 12V real fast....there for a 4S is what is needed....they Do charge up to 16.8v but that wont hurt the 12v motor's very much....5S would be nearing 24v or Double the rated capacity for the 12v motor's...and would more then likely fry the motor's sooner then later.

3S will stress the pack as the needed amperage is more then the pack could supply....Get a Zippy 4S and be done with it.

madweazl the RTR box comes with a single 775 motor...while the original losi box is dual 550's.

Either way its a moot point...Losi is releasing a "New" box sometime soon and im sure the craptastic 550's will be ditched for monster 775's.

Thanks for helping clarify that Integra. I've got a 3s at home, and now I know not to try to make it run my starter box .. and why.

4s LiPo should be okay to run either Single 775, Dual 775, or Dual 550's, right?

I have the Losi RTR box and I use a home made 12 cell Nicad Pack from some old 1500mah cells I had laying around and it works great. Lasts all day and is strong. I see no need in buying high dollar Lipo's for a starter box, YET!

i would personally say 20C minimum...buddy bought a cheap o 15C off ebay and it DID not have the same power output as the 20-35C's i have in my collection...and the price break seem's to be right at 20C...anything above you'll pay a little more for...and anything less you pay Significantly less for.
