hot pipe..cool head

i never experienced this but was racing today and noticed that my exaust was extremely hot but my cyl. head was at normal operating temp,
(i have novarossi 21-5k and novarossi 9886 exaust)
other than this it was running fine, any ideas?:weird:

smb17 09-06-2009 04:13 PM

sounds alright to me. I am not sure what the problem is. Maybe more details will help?

helivaguy 09-06-2009 04:41 PM

my pipe was extremely hot for my liking,i put a drop of spit on it and it sizzled like a frozen turkey in a deep fryer, did the same for the cylinder head and it barely sizzled or bubbled..warm-hot to the touch.
something just seems a little off to me but it was running fine so i dont know if im being over concerned about this.
mugen mbx5r buggy-engine has just under a gallon and the 9886 inline set about the same using byrons 20% gen2.
i also have a hyper 8.5 pro with the same motor/pipe combo and have not experienced this.

How many head button shims are you running.
Try taking one of the thinnest head button shims
out. This will raise the head temp and lower the
pipe temp.

helivaguy 09-06-2009 05:23 PM

i have the factory shims,2 aluminum with 1 copper in between.

The pipe is not a heatsink. It's aluminum but not finned so the head cools quickly, the pipe does not. Plus exhaust temps are always very high. Somewhere on youtube is a video of an F1 car without the bodywork being fired up at night. Just sitting there at idle and getting revved up occasionally it still turns the headers white hot.

Found it, now this is hot exhaust:

GOD i love that noise.

Check out Massivemods.com, Mark has info
on the site about the proper shimming of
nitro motors. He explains about running too
much head button shim for the nitro content
that is ran. It causes very high pipe temps
and low head temps. Bodies melting is also
a good sign of this condition.

helivaguy 09-06-2009 05:48 PM

yea thats music to my ears!:tire::tire::tire:

Hey helivaguy, give Monty at Houston Engine Services
a shout. He is the Novarossi engine guru. His thread is
on pg.1 of this Off-Road Nitro section, or give him a call.
I think the info is in the modded motors section of the
MM site.

I know the write-up is on the GO engines, but they
are designed after the Novarossi P5 and manufactured
in Tiawannie.
