Not every motor is the same. Stop listening to the HAS to be over this temp crap. Honestly, if your engine is running at what you think if very good performance and its putting out good smoke, your fine, your engines perfect.

Thats it, you dont need an exact temp. I only use my temp gun to make sure my engine isnt over heated i dont constantly check it. Only after races to make sure its running well. You dont need a temp gun at all really.

Throw the damn temp gun away. It's a waste of money.

Well ok, I do use one that was given to me for free for break-in but that's it.

Once you get a little experience with these motors you should be able to tell if it's lean without a gun and if it's rich but running 300, richening it more is not going to solve the problem.

tune for performance not temp. i rarely use a temp gun on my STS .28 hell even on the stock .25 engine i only used a temp gun on it a few times. like others have said as long as there's blue smoke coming out when you hit the throttle ur fine.

Not too much smoke though. You want to be
able to see those big pick-up trucks parked
in the street.

Fastest buggy on the track. and i still can't turn over the flywheel with the glow plug out after a gallon, i can when it's hot though.

i preheat my engine before every run too.

So, no one can ever convince me that a engine has to be over 200. Tunning to temps is ridiculous. I am about to throw away my temp gun. But it is still usefull for preheating and to guard from overheating (if that ever happens)

I am tired of people saying get it over 200, wrap a sock, wristband, foil around it etc etc.

bull crap.
If it's running well in that temp range, dont change anything. Gearing will have an affect on your temps as well. I use to try and keep everything around 200-210 but it was impossible with the gearing I preferred on some tracks. It would run perfect at 225 so I just started leaving it there. I didnt notice the life of the motor degrading at all. I usually run as lean as safely possible because I get great throttle response and good mileage.

where are you temping it?

How long after your 7-10+min run are you temping it?

So will the restrictor maybe make it run hotter? I don't know why i have not put it in yet.
When you put the restrictor in, you will need to lean the motor to compensate for less air going into the carb. As a benefit, your fuel mileage will be better with the restrictor in than without. The addition of the restrictor will no doubt have some effect on the tune thus requiring you to retune the motor thus different head temps. There are alot of things that can affect head temps, plugs, fuel, pipe, air filter condition, etc.
Manufacturers all use different operating temps as ideal temps so that when the sleeve expands due to heat, the piston is still able to seal and have compression. Running to cold wont kill a motor, but it will shorten the life of the rod and the crank pin.

i am running oddonell 20% with a re11 losi pipe. P3 plug. no restrictor, 1 head shim.

I am told that if i am running 20% i can take the copper shim out and just leave the silver head gasket.

I am going to retune with the restrictor and no shim.

and while i am at it, new clutch shoes, bearings, springs.
