I have a orion 1600 battery for my reciever. I just got a superbrain and i am charging at 1 amp well, it's a 6 volt battery and it is reading 6.6 volts now?? isn't that past fully charged? and it's still charging getting close to 7 volts?? WTF?

A "6v" pack can be as high as around 7.2v when fresh off the charger. It's normal. When you use the battery, it will fall to ~6v quickly and stay there for a while.

assuming my battery is dead. How long would a 1600 nimh at 1 amp on a superbrain charger take to charge? 1 hour? half? just wanna know how long i will be sitting here.


BTW i had a 8 hour wall charger before i got the superbrain

Fully depleted it should take 30-40 minutes, make sure you cycle your batteries Dreaux, so they last.

Cycle= fully discharge, then fully charge. (not at the races though)

Ya the numbers are weird my 1600 pack reads 7.2 when the chafer is on and then it drops down a little bit. That's completly normal.

Not to be argumentative against Jaz, but...

There is no *need to cycle nimh batteries. They don't suffer from the memory effect associated with nicd. If you do cycle them, don't go below 1v/cell for nimh (or 0.9v/cell for nicd). That means your 5-cell Rx pack shouldn't be discharged below 5v during cycling.

*A new nmih battery won't function its best until it's been used and charged five times or so. Some people speed up this process by cycling them when new.

1 amp charge rate x 1600 mia pack = 1.6 hours to charge if fully discharged.

Nothing to do with memory Mark..NiMH batteries will last longer if you cycle them..doesn't need to be done every week, but bringing the volts up and down will help keep the cells balanced and increase the longevity of the packs...but for $15, most people dont really care

Nimh do suffer performance depending on how you take care of them. If you never run them down below 50% charge they will do something like the nicads did & if you let them sit too long they will have problems charging. But you are mostly right mark they are much better than nicads just not as good as they were hyped to be. No battery tech thats marketed to us is as good as promised when released.

+1 for auto cycle !! also a new pack will take a few charges and discharges to hold a good charge. If my packs have sat for a little while I will discharge to .9c per cell and charge to bring it back to life. You will get better life and power out of them.
