Default How do you clean your engine?

I was just wondering how everyone cleans the outside of the engine. For removing dust/mud/oil. If I take off the engine and the pipe comes off with it and stays attached how do I clean it without harming anything?

what i used to do was take the motor and plug up any wholes in the motor (carb exhaust etc). i would then use simple green and a tooth brush to scrub any dirt away. also as i scrubed i would use an air compresser to blow away the stuff i loosened with the brush

hope this helps
