Simple bearing question, which way to install?

Just installed a new set of Avid bearings (not ceramic) in my 8ight. After one race the rear wheel bearings are EXTREMELY gritty, more than I experienced all last year. I installed them with the yellow shield facing outwards. I didn't lube them at all during race day either. (was afraid would attract more dust)

Should they be installed with the yellow seal facing inward from now on?

Thank you.

I install mine rubber shield out & no problems so far. You can lube them if you want ,if you use grease when it heats up & forces its way out past the shield it will also force any dirt away from the shield with it.You will notice more rolling resistance when greased though so make sure you crash 1 time per race less to make up for it. I do believe Avid recomends Mobile 1, 30w motor oil as best lube for his bearings though, check his site it may have been another place saying that, either way it works well too.
