I do the same as Houston only different, Around the HS needle housing across front of carb & around ball end pull.
Sharp corners on carb dont seem to cut those things & it takes nitro a month or more to turn them yellow & loose tention, brake cleaner dont melt them either.
I use 1 band but have seen people use up to 3,not sure why but what ever makes you feel good.

Generally What I do with all of my cars is on the servo arm atach the spring then to a part of the car itself. generally there is a mechanical advantage when the servo arm is longer than needed for the throttle location and you can use the more outside holes for the spring.

I have used silicone bands and they don't last a tank. What am I doing wrong?

So does the Band get wrapped around the top of the uni ball, then around the hsn? It's a little hard to see. I'm going shopping for some hair products tomorrow!

2 cars at the track tonight had power failures, 1 went poof almost instantly, the other I managed to save after a 150' run across the track with my trusty rag in hand. Both those guys were not running any kind of a return spring. After reading this thread I stopped at Walmart today and picked up those hair ties and they work like a charm. Not that I had any issues with my car, but after seeing what happened tonight it was a eye opener. The rag I walk around with was also another idea I picked up from Monty.
