Fire Devastates Gandini Factory
European RC'ers wake up to some sad news this morning, it appears a fire ripped through GRP Gandini's factory last night in Guidizzolo, Italy. Thankfull no-one was injured in the blaze.
News: We have been told by a source that certain machines were moved from the factory last week, and some employees let go.
Article Update: The newspaper reports that the fire broke out in the factory's boiler room, an off-duty police officer spotted smoke, passed by the front of the building where one of the Gandini owners were, they went together to locate the source of smoke and found a broken window to the Boiler room. The officer raised the alarm to the Fire departments whilst Gandini entered the factory offices, at this stage free from the spreading fire, and managed to rescue documents and some computers. After some time, the heat was too great and much was left inside. The fire crews arrived soon after with all their vehicles, but at this point the fire had spread and had engulfed most of the factory. The article continues, the fire crews had problems sourcing enough water to control the fire, neighbours with water tanks made them available to help to fight the flames. At one point, bright flames shot up into the sky, presumably large amounts of magnesium in the Formula 3 racing car of Felipe Massa on display (apparently a gift from Massa to GRP, thanking them for support during his early career). Whilst the fire continues to burn, one of the Gandini daughters watches and cries desperately. By 22:30, fire crews from neighbouring cities arrive to help. The smoke is a deep black toxic one, visible from miles away and attracts curious and worried people to the scene. Soon after the roof collapses as the temperature inside becomes too great, firemen resort to breathing equipment to combat the toxic plastic fumes coming from the thousands of products inside. Today investigators will move in and examine the remains, the newspaper asks the question, How can a fire burn a factory in such little time ? It continues on to suggest the fire may have been on purpose and started in more than one place in the factory.

There were actually grumblings of financial troubles at GRP since mid last year; I think that one of their key investors decided to pull-out and that set the dominos into play. You may or may not recalla "rumor" that there was a proposal by a Chinese (or other asian national) firm to buy-out GRP. Somehow, I think there was more truth to it than we were lead to believe.
