Sealing a motor
Is it necessary to seal a new motor? Are there any downsides?

To do the pinch bolt, just cover both ends of the bolt with sealant. To do the carb boot, put a small zip tie around the bottom of it where it slips over the carb body.
Definitely seal all of your engines. You'll go insane chasing the tune at some point if a leak develops.

I agree, whether it is A $150 engine or $500 engine always seal them. I use the red high temp rtv.

sealing an engine is good practice and will make thing's easier in the long run!
i leave the carb for last as i want to seal it in the posistion i will be running it in kinda hard to do when the engine is not installed in the vehicle....
i use loctite sensor safe "ultra black" picked up a huge tube for like $5 at my local canadian tire

I use permatex ultra copper. O2 sensor safe. It'll last longer than the standard RTV if it is O2 sensor safe..
For the OP, YES you should always pull back plate and seal, as well as the carb. Tuning issues can be a real PITA no need in making them worse by not know if it is sealed or not.

RTV of any color sensor safe or not IS NOT FUEL PROOF...very few kinds of silicone will withstand the nitro...the RTV may appear to seal but it will go gummy in no time as the Nitro eats away at it....Three bond 1211 or Racer's Edge Carb sealant or Lucky 7 are the 3 products that i use.

Dang, I just started a thread about this. Stupid search option. LOL. Anyways, does the Racers' Edge sealant set-up/dry inside the tube between uses?
I have been using Versachem's Mega Black and it works great. Only problem is the sealant will dry in the tube and then I have to dig and dig to get to the fresh sealant. It's annoying to dig in that little tube for 10 minutes when sealing the whole engine is only a 10 minute job.
