I own a rustler and I have to say its tough.....if you buy the rustler, upgrade the optional parts, and NOT with any parts from traxxas, except the big bore shocks.
I bought aluminum a-arms, bulkheads, upper chassis, and shock mounts and a bigger OS engine ( .18 TZ-TX ). If you by RPM plastic parts, you cant go wrong. Once the weak parts are upgraded, its an excellent basher. The other good thing with the rustler is that almost all LHS's will have spare parts on hand if ya get broke down and cant wait for the parts to come in the mail.
I have a love/hate for traxxas. They make proven vehicles, but their own parts are cheaply made and are designed to break. I just wish they skimp on the plastic and just get RPM to make the important parts .like bulk heads, shock towers and suspension arms. I cant speak for the other vehicle you mentioned as I have no experience with it.
I can say with confidence the rustler is a good basher once you put MORE money into it. Its expensive, unless ya get an old one for dirt cheap and then upgrade with the money you would have spent on a brand new one.
