Default What is a good smallish track motor?

Allright, here is my debate. I normally run an OS Speed in my mbx-6. Love everything about the motor. Superb reliability, easy to tune, lasts a long time and it only costs $135 to rebuild at my LHS (Piston/Sleeve/Rod) and since it is so durable and the crank is coated, you can rebuild it a couple times and get a lot of life out of it. However, I race a lot at a smallish kind of track with a lot of short straights and 180's. The longest straight is only about 120'. The Speed is really to much motor for the track. I recenlty ran a practice day with a Novarossi N21BF 3 port and the car was so much easier to drive and just as fast (A little under powered but ok still). But, the fuel mileage was horendous. So, what is a good short track motor that is reliable, durable and gets good mileage? I thought about a Novarossi Plus 21-4, but the rebuilds seems to be just over $200 which is a bit steep for a $315 motor. What are the other options?

Go 3-port race.

have you considered the RB S3? I have ran this engine several times on a smaller indoor track. with this right pipe/clutch combo the engine has great low end and enough top end to pull the straights. plus I could get over 12 mins on a tank of fuel which was nice.

I used to own this motor and seemed good on mid-top end power...but wasn't good enough on bottom end. I would suggest the GO 5 port instead.
Reabuilds are cheap with GO engines and seem to last.

I agree with you, but for a small track in a buggy it would still rip on the bottom end.

On the RB S3, isn't it virtually the same as the Nova N21BF 3 port? Power wise it was ok (really leaned it out to around 250*) but it did not seem to get good run time. I did not time a tank, but only felt like around 6min. Maybe I outta time a tank and see what it does on the watch.

I also have been debating the MassiveMods Stage 5 Mod GO 3 port race. I have ran the go's before (3 port race and 7 port race) but they were the earlier versions. Maybe I will try it.
