yes there should be oil inside the planetarium gears. but it does not come stock on the rtr's. once you open it up, you will poor out black gunk, that is the grease. you need to clean that all out very well and the fill them up with diff oils. the standard set up is 7000, 5000, 2000. that is a really good setup for most tracks

pick up some Naptha(petroleum ether) @ Walmart or paint store(be prepared to show ID for this as people use it for other things), then You put the differential parts in a jar with naptha in it for 20-30 seconds, swirl around, then dump them out, wipe/dry off, re-fill with fluid of choice then re-assemble. Also make sure to check all o-rings, bearings etc. in diff assemblies since you are there.

When you service the diffs take it slow and remeber where each part is before taking it off. Give yourself 4 hours or so for the 1st time to complete this task. I am newer as well and it took me 5 hours to do all 3 diffs. I would also recommend having the manual handy so that you can reference where the part go if you forget.
The actual cleaning, rebuilding, and filling process is easy. What takes alot of time is putting everything back together.
Have fun and take it slow.
I went with 5 7 5 and it is way to agressive for me. I am having trouble with the back end spinning out and turning forget it.

No wonder you are having trouble...I recommend you two should try 3/5/2. That would make the buggy fairly easy for you to drive. 5 is too thick for the rear.
