how many different variations are there of the kits?

There is still only one kit. There have been several running changes made to the buggy ie body wrap kit, different outdrives, arms, etc. I believe that as long as you buy a kit which comes with the up grade rc wrap you will have the revised kit. Dont hold me too this as I am not 100% sure, but most of the hobby shops are aware of the updated kits and should be able to tell you. Either way the car rocks.

It has an Upgrade sticker kit inside. Does it have a born on date stamped on the chassis?

There is only 2 version of the kit, the original and the updated. The updated kits have and upgrade R/C sticker on the outside of the box next to the proline sticker. If it has the sticker, then it should be the updated kit. No sticker then it is the original kit.

ok thank you guys.

Also is it worth getting the original kit if the they are getting discounted, and updating later?

How crucial are the updates, or could I happily run the original without any dramas?

Yes if your building and driving are above average, the parts upgraded are mainly for added strength or minor tweaks to parts to improve them, however lots of people are running the original car with no issues whatsoever, but i guess it would really depend on how discounted it was to start of with really
