broken crank
well, the crank in my vspec broke sunday. the little pin the rod rotates on broke off. Im looking for a new crank and a rod- i guess i got lucky cuz nothing else is damaged..
anyone have anything they r lookin to get rid of? id like to put a speed crank in, but if all else fails ill get the oem. is there a difference between the original and the speed rods? do i have any other options- i think i remember reading somewhere that the ninja jx crank is the same as the os speed?

You can use either the Speed or Ninja JX21 crankshaft. I've read that the timing is a little more aggressive on the Speed crank, but both have the silicon filling and DLC coating. The Speed also has the two small weights installed on the end nearest the back plate of the engine, which the V-spec and JX21 do not have. I have a JX21 crankshaft for sale here: http://www.rctech.net/forum/r-c-item...-new-sale.html
As for the rods, the Speed and JX21 rods are identical, both having a small hole in the front side that allows the fuel/oil to pass through to the crankshaft pin(what broke off on your engine). Both rods also have more of a knife edge than the V-spec rod.

If I remember correctly, the main purpose of the Tungsten weight in the crankshaft of the Speed is to help smooth out the delivery of the power. It takes some of the "explosive" feeling of a standard V-spec away, making it a little easier to drive(smooth feel). To some people, this might be a good thing, to others, they may like the extra hit that a non weighted crank can give. Again, I'm not the foremost authority on engines, but I'm quite sure that's one of the main purposes of the weights.

i would go with the speed crank and rod...

I would get the JX crank and rod. better bang for ur bux over the speed. it'll have the same power delivery, and get better fuel mileage.
IMHO the speed crank is stupid. i would sooner run the stock crank modded, which is what the JX crank really is.
the DLC coating is to reduce friction/heat, and is also very hard so it doesn't wear. This is a get feature on the JX / Speed engines. no more burning up crank pins. =)
