Default Japanese Nats - Qualifying

Neo Buggy is in the land of the rising sun this weekend for the 1/8 off road Japan Nationals, held in Chiba, one and a half hours drive east of Tokyo, on the FUTABA Shop Buggy Track, owned by Mugen Seiki. The track looks awesome with a really fast back straight and a challenging jump section in its center. The hard packed dirt is really smooth, without a single rock. A chassis can go through the whole of qualifying without a single scratch. The average lap time is in the 42s, while the top five fast guys are doing some high 39s. Tire choice is unique litterally. Pro-line Inside Job M3 for all with the pins cut more of less half of their height depending on the track temperature.
The racing format is similar to IFMAR, five rounds of 10 minutes qualifyer, with the 3 best counting. The difference is that contrary to IFMAR the TQ and 2nd qualifyer get their direct ticket for the A-main.

A total of 92 racers from all over Japan, Korea and Taiwan entered this year Nats and it is no surprise to find a large majority of Japanese chassis in the pits. Mugen MBX5R and MBX6 are extremely popular here (it is Mugen’s home track after all) with nearly half of the entries. Kyosho comes second with its MP9, with 30+ cars. The Hot Bodies team has 9 cars. Only a couple of Losi and two lonely RC8 and Xray. No Hobao, no Jammin here.
No new stuff in the pits, except an aluminum mud gard for the Mugen.
Newly crowned World Champ Hara is still running the lightweight chassis on his D8 but went back to the stock rear shocks /shock tower on this track.

Qualifying was dominated by team Hot Bodies driver Matsuzaki Hayato with his D8. Hayato TQed round 1, 4 and 5. Mugen driver Kenji Osaka and his MBX6 took round 3 and second overal, while Losi driver Takeshi Shinomiya (’04 Japanese 4WD electric buggy champ) TQed round 2 and finished 10th overal. World Champ Hara settled for 3rd, which will give him top spot in the even Semi-final tomorrow.
Again an impressive showing for the Hot Bodies D8, with 3 cars in the top 4.

Atsushi Hara confirmed his status as World Champ by winning his 2nd consecutive Japanaese Nationals today at the Mugen owned track in Chiba. Team mate Hayato had taken TQ, but couldn't quite live with Hara's pace.

Today was the third and final day of the 2008 JMRCA 1/8 Buggy Nats and like the two previous days, all mains started right on time. Japanese are good at running race event smoothly. However marshalling is not like in Europe or USA. Marshalls are super slow.

In the Even 20min semi final, the 4th qualifier, 14 years old Ido driving a D8, started from top spot but ruined his chance when he flamed out at the start. He never recovered. Second spot Tanaka driving a Kyosho led from the start to finish with a strong and consistent drive over 3 Mugen drivers. Another casualty was Shinomiya, the Losi driver, who got a stop-and-go for short cutting the track that put him in the back of the pack.

The Odd semi final had less drama. Hara took off from top spot and never looked back, with a clean drive, almost 1 second faster per lap than anybody else. Veterans Kawamoto and Kanai finished 2nd and 3rd.

Final: Clean start at the tone. The top five went through the first corner in their starting position.
In the second lap, Kenji Osaka rolled over and Hara went by. Back on four wheels, Osaka hit Tanaka which allowed Kawamoto to move into 3rd. At 3 min, the leader Hayato makes a small mistake and Hara gets the lead. The two drivers will change positions for the next few laps until Hayato bobbled allowing Hara to slowly pull away and Kawamoto to catch up on him. The 2 briefly battled for the second place losing even more time on Hara who was making no mistakes at this point. At the 30 min mark, Hara was 15 sec clear over Hayato who got the best of Kawamoto who himself got passed by a late charging Kenji Osaka.
Hara continued to strech his lead, only slowed down by two flamed-outs during his last two pit stops, that costed him only a few seconds each time, thanks to his mechanic Miura san.
Positions remained unchanged until the end, Hara crossed the loop a few seconds before the 60min mark, allowing him to do one more lap than everybody else.
The 08 World Champ clinched another title, the national one, giving the new Hot Bodies D8 another win.
