I forgot which direction the rear bearing is suppose to go. Does it go with the shield facing the front bearing or facing the backplate?

It varies. Most will go in with the retainer facing the carb so you can see the balls. Some go the other way though. Look at it closely, if the balls are off set from center in the races then put it in so the balls will be closer to the crank (farther from the carb). If they are centered it probably goes balls out (retainer toward carb) but you will have to check with the bearing manufacturer to be sure.
