I'm also new to the V-Spec and 3 needle tuning. Does anyone know of a good guide for tuning 3 needle engines? Don't mess with it doesn't offer quite the level of insight for which I'm looking.

Check this out from post #5 it will give you an idea on what it does! Plus there's also a post specific to the V spec!

I have not specifically tuned a Vspec yet, but have tuned 3 needle carbs hundres of times. First make sure the 3rd needle is at or very close to the stock setting. Generally I will get the engine tuned using only the main a low speed needle. Only then will I adjust the mid needle, and make coresponding adjustments to the low and main needles.

It sounds like you may actually be lean on the bottom, and compensating by a rich main needle, and the engine is just not clearing out.

What plug are you using?

FWIW - Hundreds of happy V-Spec owners have set the mid needle to the following position (myself included) and left it alone after that:

Set the mid needle flush with the carb housing. Then turn the needle clockwise until the slot points to 2:00. This is for a stock V-Spec. Speeds have a slightly different setting they seem to like (4:00)

I've played with that needle from noon to 4:00, and it's a very noticeable adjustment.

that one isnt measured in 'turns' like the others...

set it up so that your idle gap is about 1mm and adjust from there
