You are probably used to running the gas truck/tmaxx style clutch setup. Go on youtube and there are videos on how to put on clutch shoes/springs. The videos that I remember are by squirrel.

Default Clutch question

after assembling my engine and clutch I've noticed my crank shaft and my clutch bell move independently of each other. Is this normal?

Yep, otherwise the clutch wouldn't be a clutch. They have to move separately so the clutch can engage only when the crankshaft reaches a speed that causes the shoes to push out against the springs and rub against the inside of the clutch bell.

as in the bell spins free while the crank doesn't move? That is whats suppose to happen. The clutch will not engage until the engine is running and there's enough centrifical force to fling the shoes out to the bell. The springs pull the shoe back in.
