+2 for the naptha and dunker.

I like to leave the parts in the dunker and take the air compressor to it. Comes out dry and perty I put my diff case in as well. I like things perfect for the next race

Not cleaning out the gears and cup properly is just being lazy imo....what u guys dont wnna get ur hands dirty...

ps what if a peice of bevel gear is somehow lodged in the corner u neglected to clean out and it makes its way into the gears...then u have a set of blown bevels.....Fun Fun.

Is there anything wrong with just using unleaded petrol?

I pull them apart, remove the o-ring and gasket and put everything else in petrol for about 5-10mins and then wipe them dry. I wipe the o-rings with a paper towel and put it back together...

These are for mbx5r diffs. mind you the spur gear does show some signs of rust or something weird on the outside but everything else is fine.....

open diffs take out gear sit on absorbent kitchen paper then use cotton buds to clean out case, wipe over gears and shims with rag or paper, re-grease re-oil re-assemble done, if theres a cleaner way it would be nice

1) Take diffs apart - remove o-rings.
2) Put in paint thinner
3) Swish around for 10 seconds
4) Remove from pain thinner.


Everything comes out sparkling and very easy and quick.

I found paint thinner was really rank versus varsol. Varsol worked great...I'm going to buy some Naptha and try it next. Canadian Tire maybe? It's just camping fuel isn't it?

It's true the paint thinner does stink like hell, but it works.

Man you guys go all out. I just drain, disasemble, wipe clean, drop in alcohol bowl, leave do something else for a few minutes; drain and put back together with new diff fluid. I really do not spend a lot of time on this. Losi uses mostly dog bones, so I do but dry lub on those locations, and if needed I have a lot of spare bearings, and replace them every so often. But man I am running out of space for all the stuff for this game. I need to build a bigger shop. I stick to the KISS method. Oh! and I buy a lot of spare parts.

How offten should the diffs be cleaned? I've seen some people post they do it after every race, isnt that a little over doing it? What happens when you dont clean the diffs? Is there any signs that point to the diffs need to be cleaned?

Before each big race I redo everything. Bearings, diffs, I check every screw. I put calipers on every link arm and record everything in the log book. But if I am just doing routine club races, I do change my fluids unless I feel the diffs not doing what they are supposed to. The oil is not like transmission fluid, and does break down over time. But really unless it a big race I just plan on changing the diff stuff once a month. check the bearings when I have them exposed. I do change my clutch bearing religously. Anything on the clutch that is not perfect is replaced. I also change the clutch springs before every weekend. But I have two identical clutch setups, so I really just change the them out when I have some free time. On big race days, I will have both clutch setups slightly different, so If there is a needed change the swap out only takes a few minutes.
