Default nitromethane shortage

I saw on the NHRA broadcast on ESPN2 this weekend that there is a
worldwide shortage of nitromethane. Now that most of the world's supply
is outsourced to China, with the Olympics coming up, apparently they
have cut back on production to help clean up the environment. That, and
a lot of it has been diverted to pharmaceuticals and fertilizer
production.

The NHRA has banned all testing days at NHRA sanctioned tracks for the
rest of the season. They interviewed Don Schumacher, who has 400 drums
of his own (not VP fuels, which is the official fuel of NHRA), and he
said he might be forced to sell it on the open market due to worldwide
demand. He also mentioned that the RC hobby was hurting for nitro, too.

Yeah, I saw that too. It will be interesting how that effects us nitro rc burners this summer. I'd suggest to stock up on it for this season. Though I haven't noticed at my LHS any shortage at this time.

There's a pretty lengthy discussion on this in the on-road nitro forum....

Basically, looks like this should not affect the rc segment. NHRA is in a bind becasue they have only 1 supplier because they require such a high concentration of nitromethane.

There are several suppliers to the RC and agricultural industries since it is sold in de-sensitized levels.

My local hobby store sells the Byrons gen 2 race for $21.95 a gallon.

If i store it in a cool basement, how long will it stay fresh?

If it full, 2 years is no problem.

If it half full, I guess 6 months top.

Tip : The best if you can squeeze the fuel container so it has less air trapped inside. Or you can put the liquid into a smaller container, and LABEL IT : NITRO FUEL, so anyone can read it.
