Default Engine Modding

Ive got a XTM .18 laying around and i wanna learn how to mod these small 2-stroke engines. Ive mainly delt with 4-stroke lawnmower engines, Ive rebuilt em, tune em, and got em back running again. So iam new to 2-strokes.

-What tools would i need to make a 2-stroke engine make more HP?
-Whats the main area to look at for more HP? 4-cycle its mainly cam and vavletrain.
-Are there any good links/articles on how to make these 2-strokes run alot better?

Any other comments or advice would be greatly apprecitated!!!

Thanks
Blake

All you need is a dremmel. I wouldnt go crazy with it. Just cleanup the ports at first. Its pretty easy to get it wrong.

Thumbs up Port & Polish video.

UndergroundRC.com has a how-to port & polish video available on-line. Its pretty good, but you have to sign up for a $20.00 1-year membership. Its the only video how-to that I know of.

Ok,
-How do i remove the piston/rod/cranlshaft assembly from the block (case)?
It looks like the rod can be taken apart?
-Would a piston with a contour ontop add more HP?
-How do your remove the sleeve so i can polish up the ports?

Blake, look at these engines almost the same, what does a more radical cam do, keeps valves open longer, you don't have centerline to deal with so look at timing, and grams is huge on these engines, race teams spend alot of money on lite rods and cranks, and pistons. Think of how do remove weight, adjust timing and you will be going the right direction, how well a engine breathes is key as well, so studie the flow pathes of the engine and understand what is restrcting it and what will help it flow better. There may be some informative articals if you search 2 stroke engines on the web, they use ports as well, they may explain what stagering up different ports will do. needle files are very good to use for cleaning up ports and deburing them, a dremal will get you started, but once you get the idea of what you want to accomplish, find a machine shop that may let you use there cnc and lathes, the work will be cleaner and much more precise from one engine to another. Good luck
