I amazes me when people complain about the price of one item in RC like the PT's (and will never wear out or break with very little care) when in fact almost everything else on the cars are way over priced! For that matter we even brag about how much we spent on a hot selling motor or pipe, or that cool looking purple anodized part that cost $10 to manufacture but sells for $100!

Now we have these cloned transponders for $20 less and have 10 different sets of numbers to choose from. I guess they have to have all those numbers because there's a chance that someone will have another cloned trans with the same set of numbers or an AMB PT that they cloned with that number!

With AMB all you need is that one (legitimate) number.

I have a PT that was one of the first sold in the USA....works as good now as then, never even had to change the leads.

Yes, I think the RC transponders are overpriced

BUT

You can't imagine the feeling of getting back in the pits after a long main event, and finding out a full size transponder [on a real racecar] fell off your car at some point during the main! Oh boy have I spent a couple nights combing a dark dirt track in the dark for a fist sized red box with a green blinking light! Atleast the RC ones are pretty foolproof

My biggest GRIPE w/ AMB's stronghold on the TRANSPONDER Market is this.

When the AMBrc system came out - the transponders were "Affordable" at just $49.00...and there was a push to get EVERYONE to have one.

Now several years later, they are the exact SAME unit...and 10's of 1,000's of them have been sold, yet instead of lowering the price because their R&D costs were recapped...we're now OVER $100.00 for the SAME EXACT UNIT...and what's worse is unlike almost ANYTHING else on a USED market...a USED AMBrc personal transponder will sell for $75.00-$80.00 every day of the week...where most used products sell for 1/2 the original price or LESS.

My secondary GRIPE would be there is virtually NO "Resale" market. Hobbyshops don't get CRAP for a bulk purchase discount on these. (Compared to MOST products) so MOST hobbyshops don't want to STOCK them...they prefer to TAKE ORDERS and do a Min. 10 buy. (Which I believe knocks off about $10.00)

I believe these have gone UP in price EVERY Dec. 31st for the last 5-6 years. (Oh yeah, because of the Currency Rate difference between the U.S. and HOLLAND)

What's the life span of these? YEARS. $100 over 5 to 10 years of use with a re-sale value of $60-$80 seems like a good deal to me. Just get one and enjoy professional accurate timing and get on with life.
