i had both and like others said you can't go wrong with either, the big bore shocks on the ST-RR are really the difference in price between the 2 trucks.

Mugens are known for leaking diffs, and diff pins snapping
Kyosho you have to keep a close eye on the shimming of your diffs

I think my Kyohso turns a little better and handles the rough better but they are both awesome. XRAY truck is really good too.

this is what i have experienced driving both and so on.

the Kyosho STR RR is a better performer, not so much to where it will crush the Mugen, but like what was said, it handles the rough a little better.

a proper setup Mugen truggy can and will hang with anything out there, i personally think the Mugen is more durable, the leaking diffs and snapping pins is for people who do not properly maintain their Mugens, i am running the same diffs and pins for i dont know how many gallons, BUT, i will say their outdrives wear too quick, which is huge considering you can and will snap a driveshaft if not replaced, but diffs and pins...nah

every Kyosho i have seen breaks its front arms, im sure this will and can get fixed.

also, Mugen isnt manufacturing their truggys anymore....its all hear say, but it is evident that they are no longer selling the truggy as of right now...for whatever reason who knows....

so with that said, i say buy the Kyosho, or wait and see whats actually brewing from Mugen.

I personally would not buy the Xray, i tried helping a couple of people with their setup, and its never consistent, always changes....

My Mugen truggy is dialed with one setup and call it done, same with the Kyosho, its a PITA to chase setups...i dont have the experience to be chasing setups every outing. jmho

Also check out RC CAR magazines website and look up past issues, they recently did a full review of the STR RR and a couple of months back, they did a thorough test on the Mugen truggy, even came back and did a follow up issue on the same truggy. you can see break downs and what they liked and didnt like.

Well if mugen is no longer making truggies parts support might be an issue.

but the kyosho is $659, with no tires and no body...

no, im sure they will still sell parts for the truggy, if that was the case, they wouldnt be selling any parts for the old MBX5 buggy...and they do! i just think they arent selling the kits.

and as far as a lid and tires coming with the kit, i dont use the tires and rims from the mugen truggy and i dont run the same stock lid, in fact the lid is still un painted in my garage.

and after looking at their site, it doesnt specifically say they are no longer making Mugen truggys, just says they are currently out of stock..so the truggy may still be good to go! I just read on the grid people saying its discontinued...so it gave me a heart attack LMAO

who knows really, its all hear say anyhow lol

with that said i say buy whichever you can afford

man...just when I thought I had the truggy picked out someone goes and tells me this....

might as well pick up a Jammin X2 CRT...

anyone got any links for the kyosho st-rr? though parts support sucks around here for it.
the mugen had decent parts support but if its discontinued, I dont like that idea....

Mugen has parts for the truck, its the kits they were blowing out. Unless you plan on keeping that truck for 4-5 years, I don't think there is an issue.

well since they "discountinued" their kit does that mean in any way shape or form that a new truggy will be out sooner than later?

As from what is being said, yes, new models later this year. That doens't mean the existing model is dead by no means.

this is why I hate buying new r/cs

its hard to pick one and the fact that I already once bought a new kit just to have it replaced 4 months later pissed me off.

the two kits that really standout out of all the truggies are the mugen prospec and kyosho st-rr....

also browsing through kyosho's site I saw one guy raced a ST-RR 777, since when is there a 777 version of the st-rr?

Thats actually some typo, but the ST-RR is based from the inferno buggy, just made up with parts to make it a real truggy. It uses some of the same parts as a 777, but has the mechanicals parts for a truggy, thats all.

As for new cars, the ST-RR is the newest model of the two. Of course the ST-R was the older model, but can be changed over to a ST-RR also. For top RC cars to maintain there racing competitiveness, they will have to update or change models on a regular basis.
